Many people want to know how to read the Bible, and oftentimes they will then ask where to begin, in the Bible, with their reading. The answer to this question may not be the same for every individual inquirer.

Some people begin reading the Bible just as they would any other book – from its beginning. If you are one who is persistent and dedicated, that is a very workable approach. The Bible contains different genres of literature, among which is its history. Reading through the Bible from the book of Genesis forward provides a good historical foundation as to how God has worked with humanity through history.
Others individuals, being more poetic by nature, may choose to begin their reading in the book of Psalms. Or, for those who are more philosophical, they may choose to first read the book of Proverbs. The point is this: know the strengths and weaknesses of your nature, and choose a plan for reading the Bible that best fits you. But be certain to read the Bible! The Bible is the inspired Word of God and it’s profitable – all of it! “Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy,” is a set of instructions that has been followed by many people and led them to salvation and a life of peace and blessing.
Perhaps the best way for most people to read the Bible, though, is to turn to the New Testament. By beginning with the first book in the New Testament and reading forward from there, you will encounter four brief biographical sketches of the life and ministry of Jesus. Since He is the final and perfect revelation of God to humanity, it seems only reasonable to first learn of Him and then add to your understanding from there. These first four books of the New Testament are called the gospels – which essentially means they are good news!
In the gospels, you will encounter the One who came to save sinners. Jesus is the only perfect individual in that He never sinned. His teachings are simple enough that the most elementary of minds can grasp them, and yet they are profound enough that the most sophisticated will never completely understand. He is the most compassionate person who ever lived. His many miracles confounded and blessed multitudes in His day. He foretold His death and resurrection, and wicked and evil men could not thwart His purpose in coming to earth. His promised return to gather His church is drawing nearer each day, and an eternal heavenly home awaits His followers. All this is taught in the gospels, and more besides.
In conclusion, a good way to read the Bible is to first turn to the New Testament. Read it in the order in which it is presented, first the gospels and then the epistles. Then, turn to the Old Testament and read it as well. Reading the Bible is never a waste of time!
