Is the Bible the Word of God?

|

The Bible itself claims to be the Word of God. Within its pages the phrase, “thus saith the Lord” appears 413 times. There are other similar assertions, making a total of about 3800 times that it claims to be the Word of God. If in fact the Lord wasn’t speaking, or it wasn’t his message, then those assertions are lies. If they are lies, the Bible is full of them, perhaps containing more lies than any other book. The boldness of this book’s own declaration to be the Word of God sets it apart as truly unique. In essence, the Bible is declaring to be an expression of the mind and will of God.

Since the Bible claims to be the Word of God, it can reveal a message or make a prediction known only to God in advance of the actual event. This is called prophecy. Those who spoke for God with a message from God were called prophets. God anticipated that there would be false prophets who claimed to be speaking for God. He gave his people a simple test to verify the validity of the prophet. If the prediction came true, it was from God. If it wasn’t fulfilled, it was from a false prophet. (Deut. 18:21-22) The Bible is absolutely trustworthy in that the prophecies which were made hundreds of years in advance were fulfilled to a precise degree. Volumes could be written discussing each prophetic statement in the Bible and its corresponding fulfillment. All this supports the fact that the Bible is trustworthy because of its prophetic accuracy.

The Bible itself makes the claims that God’s Word is eternal. The Bible is the most loved book by many and the most hated book by others. All down through the history of the Bible, there have been those who have attempted to destroy it. Yet all has ended in failure, to the extent that even today, it is still the most widely published book of all. Men may do what they will in attempting to destroy the Bible, but they can never override the decree that the word of the Lord endures forever. (1 Pet. 1:24-25)

The Bible is unique in its historical accuracy. While the Bible’s primary purpose isn’t to be a historical record, it’s historical accuracy cannot be refuted. The field of archaeology confirms that the Bible is historically accurate. There have been thousands of archaeological discoveries in the past century that find their support in every book of the Bible.

Finally, even though the Bible wasn’t written as a scientific textbook and none of its writers claimed to be scientists, it is one hundred percent accurate in its scientific statements. The human authors were expressing the unlimited wisdom and knowledge of the creator God as they addressed scientific topics far beyond their own realm of experience or understanding.

The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to mankind. God has revealed himself for his glory and for the salvation of souls. The Bible’s absolute trustworthiness is essential in guiding us unto salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
